STRATEGY AREA 2: Shape Policies

All students and families in Chicago deserve equal access to high-quality school options close to home. The process of researching for, applying to, and enrolling in schools shouldn't be more cumbersome for some students than for others. We support policies that remove barriers to enrolling in high-quality schools.

A major focus of our work over the past year has been to support the adoption and implementation of Chicago’s first-ever universal enrollment platform for high schools through GoCPS—providing 26,000 8th graders with a more transparent and fair chance to access a high-quality school. A common, single application—or universal enrollment (UE)—had been on the district’s “wish list” for many years, with three attempts since 2003. It took the right combination of parent engagement, diligent project management and research—all skills that we’ve honed at New Schools for Chicago and provided to the district—to finally get UE to this stage.
